What is the best online trading account?

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 07:53 AM PDT

Question by questioner: What is the best online trading account?
I am planning to open a new online trading account to trade the stocks. I am wondering what are my options and which option is the best in terms of costs for each transaction or less overhead costs and no hidden fees?

Best answer:

Answer by Livy
I think Scottrade is the cheapest, but it’s bare bones. No short selling, no stop losses (big disadvantage), etc. E-trade and Schwab are similar in pricing to each other; they really push you to fund your account through a checking account though. I believe E-Trade is the most popular in terms of users.

I prefer TDAmeritrade. $ 9.99 a trade on stocks, plain and simple. Your account funds that aren’t in stocks are held in a money market that is FDIC insured and earns interest. It has all the options such as short selling and stop losses, and you can trade pretty much anything but currencies.

Do you research, and if you like you can always open an account at all of them to test it out and get inside, just don’t fund them until you decide which one to stick with.

Q&A: How do the tax laws work with playing the forex market with a US broker and being a Canadian resident?

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 03:51 AM PDT

Question by dodger346: How do the tax laws work with playing the forex market with a US broker and being a Canadian resident?
I currently dabble in the forex market and using a US broker. How will I be taxed on my earnings, and what happeneds if I lose money that year, is it a capital loss? HOw does this work in regards to canadian tax laws with the broker being in the US?

Best answer:

Answer by T E
Your tax reporting for dealing with a US broker is the same as dealing with a cdn broker in that the income reporting and transactions should be translated in Cdn $ .

Regarding your quesion whether your loss should be a capital loss depends on whether your “playing” in the fx market constiute an investment or a business. There are no provisions in the Act which specify whether a foreign exchange gain or loss is on account of income or capital. An investment is generally in a situation of buy and hold, while a business is in a situation when you are knowledgeable and maybe with insider information, lots of daily time spent and numerous buys and sells during the day or week, etc.

Please see the CRA's IT-95R "Foreign Exchange Gains and Losses".

Regarding Forex Market Hours?

Posted: 04 Oct 2012 11:46 PM PDT

Question by Kat Hillard: Regarding Forex Market Hours?
Everyone talks about how the Forex market is open 24-hours, but then what are these “sessions” about? For instance, the New York “session” is only open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST.

Does that mean that you can only enter/exit a trade with a currency pair involving USD during THOSE hours? What I mean is, can you buy/sell EUR/USD or USD/EUR at ANY time during the day, or only when the New York and London sessions are BOTH open?

You can trade Forex online with a broker 24 hours a day monday through friday. Not just while the stock exchange is open

Hi Johan,

have you searched for your homepage in “quotes”, if it doesn’t show up then this means it’s been de-indexed. Hopefully, this isn’t the case. Either way, you need to get Google’s trust back, and I think you’re going about it in the right way by steadily adding more content. However, don’t stop backlinking! Doesn’t that look bad? Your site gets penalized and then you suddenly stop like you knew it was wrong.

Also, look over all the outbound links on your site. See if you might have one going to a bad site unintentionally or if a site you linked to went sour -> this could definitely harm your site b/c Google knows you have complete control over your on-page optimization.

Best of luck,
Ben Jackson
